Final meetings in Estonia: top leading Estonian institutions of the "science and education" cluster

inJanuary 28, 2023

On January 27, the Ukrainian delegation visited several important places at once: Estonian Research Council, Education and Youth Board, Delta Center and University of Tartu.

The Estonian Research Council is in the status of a government fund, created to concentrate funding of research works and guarantee better functioning of funding systems. The main goal of the Estonian Research Council is to support researchers, provide grants and promote applied research in various fields. The Council manages the Estonian Research Information System (ETIS), which contains information on research institutions, researchers, research projects and research results. Specialists also try to attract young people to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, raise public awareness of science and its importance to society.

Marika Meltsas (Head of the Estonian Research Information System) and Indrek Ots (Head of the Research and Development Funding Department) helped to get to know the Estonian Research Council.

The team also learned more about Council on Education and Youth from the CEO of Harno – Jaak Raie.  Education and Youth Board — a state institution of the Ministry of Education and Research, which is engaged in the implementation of educational and youth policy. Their task is to offer high-quality, modern and equally accessible educational opportunities and services.

After that, the delegation went to a meeting with Delta Centre. The tour was conducted by Henry Narits, a marketing and communications specialist at the Institute of Computer Sciences of the University of Tartu. Educators learned more about the unique interdisciplinary center of learning, research and innovation. The Delta Center of the University of Tartu is one of the most modern centers of digital technologies, analytical and economic thought, uniting an active community of students, researchers and innovators in the fields of computer science, robotics, technology, mathematics, statistics, economics, management and business. It was interesting to observe how training, best experience in research and challenges of business and society are professionally combined.

Finally, the team was met by Tartu University Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Aune Valk and Development Director Taivo Raud. It is worth noting that the University of Tartu is a leading research educational institution in Estonia. It is considered one of the oldest in Northern and Eastern Europe and belongs to the Top-300 most prestigious world universities.

In addition, the University of Tartu actively expresses its support for Ukraine. For example, this academic year 205 new Ukrainian students started free studies, the University created a scholarship fund to collect and direct donations to support Ukrainian students' studies. The Senate also provided an opportunity to issue special assistance taking into account the needs of Ukrainian students and many other material and moral assistance to the brave Ukrainian people.

Veronika Yuriivna sincerely thanked all the participants who joined the introductory meetings in the leading scientific and educational Estonian institutions. It is this cooperation, even in the face of full-scale invasion and brutal war, that helps to keep the Ukrainian educational front strong and loyal. We are sincerely grateful to all Estonian colleagues who helped us get to know their practice of applying and combining the fields of education, science, engineering and technology.

We continue to work!

We work for victory!
