ISTU congratulates all Ukrainians on International Mother Language Day

inFebruary 21, 2023

Today - February 21 - International Scientific and Technical University named after Academician Yuriy Bugai, like the whole world, celebrates the International Mother Language Day. The holiday was introduced as an international holiday in 1999. It was then that the UNESCO organization at the next General Conference announced the "support of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism".

Currently, more than 43% of all existing languages in the world are under threat of extinction. That is why it is worth nurturing your native language and using it constantly: talking with friends or family, ordering coffee, buying movie tickets, learning and teaching, loving and creating. After all, as the modern writer Serhii Zhadan said: "Language dies when love is not spoken."

Ukraine has long defended the right to communicate and create in Ukrainian against Russian propaganda, repression and complete language restrictions. Today, it is another additional tool for Ukrainian self-identification and belonging, a method to distance yourself from the occupiers as far as possible.

And remember:

"A language disappears not because others don't teach it, but because those who know it don't speak it."
