Gifts and greetings: Ukrainians celebrate the Old New Year

inJanuary 13, 2020

The complex and unpredictable interweaving of folk traditions with official and religious holidays has been characteristic of Ukrainians since ancient times. Due to the complex historical fate of our people, ancient holidays were never officially celebrated, but this did not prevent us, Ukrainians, from carrying our identity through the ages and trials.

One of these holidays is the Old New Year and the day before it. This day is simultaneously the beginning of the new year according to the Julian calendar, the church day of St. Melania and the national Generous Evening. For Ukrainians, the most important is, of course, the last holiday.

Traditionally in Ukraine, on the evening of January 13, they set the table with the obligatory kutya, go to the neighbors' houses and wish a generous New Year - they are generous. This tradition has survived to this day and is supported by young people. Even in big cities, you can often hear traditional Christmas songs, meet real nativity scenes, or simply see grain scattered on the street - a sure sign of the holiday and a guarantee of good humor.

The main thing in this holiday is a good heart and wishes for abundance, peace and happiness. So we at ISTU wish you productivity and well-being in the New Year!

Generous evening, good evening, good health to good people!
